Flowering pot plants are one of the easiest ways to bring colour and life indoors. Unlike cut flowers, they last for weeks, sometimes even months, making them a worthwhile choice for everyday living spaces.
Most flowering houseplants enjoy good light, cooler rooms and evenly damp soil. If you’re looking to brighten up your home, these are our favourite flowering indoor plants to grow and enjoy.
Indoor Azaleas
Indoor azaleas are perfect for adding soft colour during the colder months. Varieties bred for indoor growing, such as Rhododendron simsii, produce masses of blooms that instantly lift a room.
Care notes: Place in a bright spot away from harsh sunlight. They prefer cool air and slightly damp soil. A light daily mist helps while flowering.
Top tip: Once flowering slows, move the plant to a brighter position and feed fortnightly to keep it healthy.
Chrysanthemums
Chrysanthemums bring cheerful colour into the home and are available in a wide range of shades. When cared for properly, the flowers can last well over a month.
Care notes: Give them plenty of light and keep them in a cool part of the house. Water regularly so the soil never dries out completely.
Top tip: When they’re done indoors, chrysanthemums can be planted out into the garden.
Cyclamens
Cyclamens are a winter favourite, with delicate blooms held above patterned leaves. They thrive indoors during cooler weather and can flower for several months.
Care notes: Position near a bright window, but out of direct sun. Cool temperatures and moist soil are essential. Water from the bottom by standing the pot in water.
Top tip: After flowering, ease back on watering and allow the plant to rest.
Kalanchoe
Kalanchoe is a reliable choice for year-round colour and suits busy households. Its fleshy leaves store water, making it more forgiving than most flowering plants.
Care notes: Place in a well-lit room and let the top layer of soil dry out before watering again.
Top tip: Trim off spent flowers and give the plant a short rest period to encourage future blooms.
Liliums
Liliums make a striking indoor feature with their elegant flowers and sweet fragrance. Grown from bulbs, they perform just as beautifully inside as they do outdoors.
Care notes: Keep in bright, indirect light and water regularly using well-draining soil. Cooler conditions help the flowers last longer.
Top tip: Keep lilies out of reach of pets, as they are toxic to cats.
With the right spot and a little attention, flowering indoor plants can transform your home and keep it looking fresh season after season.
