Knowing how to harvest chia seeds means you’ll be able to harness their nutritional benefits easily. Chia plants aren’t hard to grow as long as the warmer conditions are met. Growing is easy, and so is harvesting. Here’s how you can successfully harvest chia seeds and store them at their best so you can get the most from them.

How to harvest chia seeds

The harvest of chia seeds can be a bit labour-intensive, but it is worth it if you want a direct, controlled source of this incredible fibre. You can direct-sow the seed after their last frost date in a full sun location and well-draining soil.  As long as the soil of your plants is moist until germination, expect a large seed harvest. The success rate of collecting chia seeds without waste has a lot to do with timing. When growing chia at home, it is possible to pick individual flower heads when they appear ready, rather than harvesting them in mass. You need to be careful, though, because if you wait until the flower head browns, you risk losing the seeds. What you can do instead is:

  • Begin harvesting your chia as soon as most of the petals have fallen off the flower.
  • Give the heads time to dry on the drying rack. Some of the chia seeds will break free in the process.
  • Do not hang the plants upside down in your shed, as you’ll lose a few seeds
  • You can also crush the seeds manually with your hands.
