African violets are a classic addition to South African homes, loved for their soft velvety leaves and dainty blooms.

They’re not high-maintenance, but if yours is refusing to flower or looking a little sad, chances are you’re making one of these simple mistakes.

Putting it in the wrong light

It’s tempting to pop your plant wherever there’s a gap—but not all light is good light. African violets need lots of brightness but hate direct sun. A sunny windowsill that doesn’t get harsh sunlight is perfect. If your plant’s leaves are curling or it’s not flowering, it might be time to rethink its location.

Watering the wrong way

Yes, there is a wrong way to water an African violet. Splashing the leaves can leave them scorched, especially in sunlight. Either water from below by filling the saucer, or if you water from the top, aim carefully at the soil and use lukewarm water. Once a week is usually enough.

Forgetting to feed it

Even hardy plants need a little boost. African violets enjoy a dose of general liquid fertiliser like Nitrosol every month or so. It’s the secret to keeping those flowers coming and the leaves lush.

Bonus tip: If your home feels dry, especially in summer, your plant might be gasping. African violets thrive in 40–60% humidity. A simple tray filled with moist river sand under the pot can make a big difference.

Get these basics right, and your African violet will reward you with colour and charm all year long.
