Oranges are generally more popular in the colder months in South Africa.

People tend to buy more orange fruits than they need, and those with fruiting orange trees usually have an abundance of oranges in their homes to share with family and friends. There are many creative and sustainable ways to preserve your oranges, making them delicious and fresh for a longer period of time.

Orange jam

Orange jam is not popular in commercial jam flavours that are available in stores. Boil 2 cups of water in a pot. Peel at least four oranges, cut or section them. You can even add the peels for a stronger citrus flavour and texture.

Once the pot has reached a boiling point, pour four spoons of sugar and a spoonful of maple syrup. Put the oranges in the pot and leave to boil. When the oranges have softened and boiled in the water, you can put the mixture in a blender for a smoother texture. Store your orange jam in a mason jar and place it in a cool, dry place or fridge.

Dehydrate the oranges

Dehydrated oranges are a flavoursome addition to any drinks, mojitos, mocktails and even cocktails. They also make a drink appear aesthetically appealing.

Cut your oranges into slices, place baking paper on your oven, and try to place your sliced oranges on the baking tray. Light the oven to at least 120 degrees and let the oranges dehydrate for at least 1-2 hours.

Make orange juice

There are many ways to make orange juice. From putting peeled oranges in a blender for a thick orange juice with pulp to juicing oranges in a juicer machine for a smoother texture of oranges or fermenting the oranges. By adding a little yeast in your orange juice and letting it settle for a week to get a fizzy fermented orange juice.

With oranges in abundance during the colder months, finding ways to preserve and enjoy them beyond just eating them fresh is both sustainable and satisfying.

Whether you choose to make a sweet orange jam, flavourful dehydrated slices, or refreshing juice, these methods ensure that your oranges never go to waste and add a creative, delicious touch to your meals and drinks.
