Clever tips for small spaces

Italtile brand manager Amraj Lux Dursan shares his expert tips for enhancing small spaces

Large tiles

Small spaces in the home are not limited to bathrooms and powder rooms. One of the most effective ways to create a sense of spaciousness is to use large format tiles like Italtile’s natural looking Slate Collection (400mm x 800mm). For a more modern feel the dConcreto Tile Collection is available in a slab size of 600mm x 1200mm and in colours which reflect a natural concrete aesthetic.

Floating vanity

These large format tiles have fewer grout joints and therefore give the illusion of more space. The dConcreto Collection also has rectified edges which allow for the tiles to be laid very close to each other.

Shower

In bathrooms and powder rooms the same approach to tiling can be taken to enhance the space. In addition, floating vanities and basins open up floor space while large mirrors add spatial depth. Freestanding baths such as the Carlos Bath, with sleek lines and angles is also great for a small space.

Traditional built-in baths should only be considered in larger bathrooms. Shower plinths and framed shower doors take up room visually. To avoid this install a shower floor which is almost flush with the bathroom floor but has a gradient for water run-off. Finish off these new-age showers with frameless shower enclosures for a more spacious feel.
