How to make your bed a focal point

As the most important piece of furniture in your bedroom, your bed deserves to be the star of the show. Here are four ways to turn it into an eye-catching focal point

1 WONDERFUL WALLS

Creating a feature wall with a gorgeous wallpaper is a simple way to ensure your bed takes centre stage. The simple vase of flowers on the bedside table is a small touch which always makes a bed seem more inviting. (Fabric and wallpaper by Thibaut from St Leger & Viney).

2 THE ART OF DECORATING

A large piece of art catches your eye in this bedroom. “Scale is imperative; the imposing size, shape and colour of this sleigh bed made a sizeable artwork necessary. In a room with a daintier bed, a collection of smaller frames would be more appropriate,” explains Grant Horak of Horak Venter Design. “What’s most important, though, is to choose something that’s unique to make an intimate space that much more personal. Bring things back from your travels, like this piece of Polynesian tapa cloth for example, and have them framed.”

3 SEEING DOUBLE

Highlighted by dimmable downlights, an ornate Thai carving creates a striking backdrop for the bed in this bedroom. It’s flanked by mirrors built into wooden panelling and floating shelves which serve as bedside tables. (Design: Horak Venter).

4 CROWNING GLORY

By adding height and drama, a canopy will give an ordinary bed all the prominence of a four poster – and it’s not just an option for frill seekers. (Décor: Desmond Archibald Interiors).
